The main issue with your tech gadgets, PC, smartphone, wearable device or much more products is the battery repetitive charging, it is really annoying to wait for long two hours to use your device, specially in emergency situations, and now, your old Lithium-ion batteries could be replaced by a new aluminum battery.
Thanks to new researches in the Stanford University, new aluminum-ion battery is being developed and tested, this type of batteries was introduced a long time ago, but it has failed to reach the Lithium-ion performance and failed in just 100 recharge cycles. Now, this new prototype will cost the half time in term of production, also it can reach a whole 7500 recharging cycles, 7.5 times longer than your Lithium battery, and the big new is, the aluminum-ion battery can be recharged in just one minute according to Dai Hongjie, a Stanford chemistry professor. That’s really exciting !
Another plus, the new aluminum prototype will not even catch fire, Dai Hongjie said “Our new battery won’t catch fire, even if you drill through it“, looks very promising, but what are the unsolved issues.
Until now, some performance improvement is still missing, the new battery can only produce 2 volts, vs 3.6 volt for the lithium-ion battery, also, the prototype can give just 40 watts of electricity, versus 100 to 206 W/kg for the Lithium one, but according to the professor “Improving the cathode material could eventually increase the voltage and energy density, Otherwise, our battery has everything else you’d dream that a battery should have: inexpensive electrodes, good safety, high-speed charging, flexibility and long cycle life. I see this as a new battery in its early days. It’s quite exciting.”
This maybe a dream coming true !
